Eric Lucas vs Librado Andrade in Quebec City

Eric Lucas vs. Librado Andrade
Friday, May 28th at the Pepsi Colisee in Quebec City
Montreal, Wednesday, March 17th 2010 – Following his successful return to the ring last December, Éric Lucas (39-7-3 15 K.-O.) will be looking to add a 40th win to his outstanding pro record on Friday, May 28th in Quebec City. Considered a Quebec boxing hero, Lucas will be lacing up the gloves against the ever popular Librado Andrade (28-3-0, 21 KO). Andrade is no stranger to Quebec boxing fans, having fought 4 times in this province and showing a record of 2 wins (vs Otis Grant and Vitaliy Tsypko) and 2 losses (both to Lucian Bute, the last by sensational KO last November 28th at the same venue).
This bout will be a tough task for Eric, who has only fought once in the last 4 years plus. According to Eric, his ring experience and strong defensive skills are the keys to beating Librado. The former WBC champion has not let up on the intensity level in the gym and will continue his preparation in Florida with his trainer Stephan Larouche and stablemate Lucian Bute.
“I am extremely happy, this is a very significant bout and the type of fight I wanted” stated Eric by way of telephone conference. “This fight will permit me to evaluate myself well and, if I win, all the doors will open up for me”.
Despite the huge challenge, Eric Lucas accepted this bout the moment InterBox proposed it to him.
“I am extremely motivated, excited and confident. I felt the electric atmosphere of the Pepsi Colisee last November 28th when Lucian won, and Quebec City really touched me. Now I want to experience that euphoria for myself in that City” states Eric Lucas.
« We cannot take Librado Andrade lightly » states head trainer Stephan Larouche. “Eric is the type of boxer that is reliable and respects the game plan. His physical conditioning and endurance will serve him well over the 10 round fight”.
Quebec boxers to be showcased on the undercard
InterBox President Mr. Jean Bedard stated that the undercard for the May 28th Gala will include boxers from Quebec. “We will be actively working on the undercard over the next few weeks, but we definitely want to give a chance to our local boxers to fight in front of their fans”.
Jesse Brinkley vs. Sakio Bika purse bid
InterBox won the IBF purse bid yesterday and as such will be in charge of promoting the Jesse Brinkley (35-5-0, 22 KO) vs. Sakio Bika (28-3-2, 19 KO) IBF Super Middleweight title Eliminator to determine the Mandatory contender for the belt held by Lucian Bute. InterBox beat out bids by Star Boxing (Team Brinkley) and Golden Boy Promotions (Team Andrade). InterBox has 90 days to promote the bout (until June 16th).
"We have not decided where to place this bout yet. It can become part of our April 17th show in Montreal, or of the May 28th show in Quebec City. We have no strategy yet. We would like to attract an American TV network to Quebec. I believe that with Lucas, Andrade, Brinkley and Bika we increase our chances of having them cross the border” states Jean Bedard.
Stay tuned for more details and ticket purchase information over the next few weeks.

)Brigitte Tremblay
Entrevue de Stéphane Larouche sur le combat Lucas-Andrade ------- fightnews --------------------------------------------It was a shock last week when it was announced that the second leg of former world champion Eric Lucas comeback would be against Librado Andrade. The hard hitting Mexican warrior makes his fifth trip to Quebec to battle the 38 year-old Lucas who returned last December after a four year absence from the ring and is now looking for his 40th win. Fightnews sat down with Lucas's longtime trainer Stephane Larouche and basically asked, why? Why a legitimate top-ten fighter for a fighter that has been out of action for so long? -----------------------------------------------
So tell me about Eric's upcoming fight with Librado Andrade ------------------------
Eric has major hopes for his future and he doesn't have that many fights left. If he's able to win a fight against a guy like Andrade, he wins a lot. A lot. By losing to a guy like Librado Andrade, it won't mean anything. You're fighting a guy with a worldwide reputation. He's fought in Denmark, he's known in North America, he's known in Mexico, he's known in Quebec and he always belongs to the top-five of the division. Losing to a guy like this, there won't be any shame in it, but beating a guy like Librado Andrade, that could propel you right away into a big fight. ----------------------------------------------------
Also, if you want to fight Librado Andrade, you better fight him now when he's just lost a fight. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Would you say it is a do-or-die fight for Eric? Will he retire if he loses? --------
Eric never came back just to be an opponent; he didn't come back for that. He trusts himself so much, he's working harder than he has at anytime over the last three or four years. He's ready to do it, but he knows it is not going to be easy. He knows in terms of endurance and strength that he's behind Andrade, but he has two months to prepare right now. ------------------------------------------------
When Eric has something in his mind, you have to trust him. I know just one thing, Eric will give it all and it's going to be an interesting fight. It's a fight with two guys with good jaws. It will be an iron-jaw meeting. ----------------------------------------------
Who came up with the suggestion of Librado as an opponent? --
It was me. ------------------------------------------------
Why? Why Andrade? ----------------------------
Eric wanted to fight in Quebec City. We wanted to find him a win. Who's the best know guy in Quebec, it was Andrade. People love him because he's such a good human being. It's a good meeting. As I said, Eric can only win in this fight. I know he won't be the favourite, I know that. He won't be favoured, but let's try, let's give it all. Ten round fight, 170 pounds. It's an interesting fight, a lot of curiosity, and that's what boxing is all about. You want to be involved in something big. Eric had a great career, he's allowed to be involved in fights that are legitimate and that he can be proud of. ------------------------------------------------
Do you see any similarities between this fight and when he defended against Omar Sheika? -----------------------------------
A little bit because Lucas is always good with guys that stand in front of him. It should be a hell of a fight to watch. --------------------------------------
Was the fight more a result of something you see in Andrade, a weakness, or something you see in Eric and how good he is looking? ------------
Librado Andrade when you know him and you respect him, he's beatable. If you don't respect Librado Andrade, he becomes almost unbeatable. Look at Yusaf Mack, when he went there I'm sure he went there thinking it would be an easy fight. He even dropped him, dropped him hard! He tried to finish him and couldn't, and ended up getting knocked out. When you know him, I think it's a different thing; you respect him and adjust to it. --------- ( Merci Tomtitom (rds) d,avoir trouvé l'article ;)
